Kerala CPI(M) MLA Kanathil Jameela Dies at 59

The Koyilandy legislator was a veteran of Kerala’s decentralised governance with a prominent role in the women’s movement.

  • Jameela died on Saturday night at a private hospital in Kozhikode after a prolonged cancer illness, according to party leaders.
  • The final rites will be held on December 2 at Atholi Kuniyilkkadavu Juma Masjid, with the body to be taken to party and public venues in Kozhikode and Koyilandy for respects as the family awaits her son’s return from the United States.
  • Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan led condolences, praising her as a spirited leader who strengthened the state’s women’s movement, with Assembly Speaker A. N. Shamseer and other leaders also paying tribute.
  • Her public life spanned from winning the Thalakkulathur grama panchayat seat in 1995 to leading the Chelannur block and Kozhikode district panchayats, alongside service as AIDWA state vice-president.
  • She entered the Assembly in 2021 by winning Koyilandy over the UDF’s N. Subramanian by 8,472 votes and is survived by her husband Kanathil Abdurahman and children Ayreej and Anooja.
