Kerala Court Gives CPI(M) Candidate 20-Year Term in 2012 Payyanur Bomb Attack

The timing throws a spotlight on Payyanur’s civic race where the CPI(M) nominee is already on the ballot.

Overview

  • The Taliparamba Additional District and Sessions Court sentenced V. K. Nishad and T. C. V. Nandakumar to an aggregate 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment with fines of ₹2.5 lakh each, ruling they will effectively serve 10 years.
  • Both were convicted of attempt to murder under IPC section 307 and offences under sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act for attacking a police vehicle with a crude bomb on August 1, 2012.
  • Co-accused A. Mithun and K. V. Kripesh were previously acquitted after charges against them were found unsustainable.
  • Nishad is a DYFI leader and the LDF nominee for Payyanur’s Vellur-Mottammal ward, having filed his nomination before the sentencing.
  • To guard against disqualification risks, CPI(M) worker M. Harindran filed as a backup candidate and has kept his nomination in place.
