Kerala Court Acquits Dileep in 2017 Actor Assault Case, Convicts Six

The Kerala government plans an appeal, with sentencing for the convicted set for December 12.

Overview

  • Ernakulam Principal Sessions Judge Honey M Varghese found the prosecution failed to prove a criminal conspiracy case against Dileep.
  • Six co-accused, including prime accused NS Sunil alias Pulsar Suni, were convicted of gang rape, kidnapping and related offences.
  • Sentencing is scheduled for 12 December, and the convicted remain in custody until the court pronounces the quantum of punishment.
  • The nearly eight-year trial featured more than 260 witnesses, many turning hostile, and contentious disputes over alleged illegal access to a memory card kept in court custody.
  • The Kerala government said it will challenge Dileep’s acquittal, as the court also cleared Charley Thomas, Sanil Kumar and Sarath G Nair.
