Kerala Court Acquits All 20 in 2012 Killing of ABVP Activist Vishal

ABVP says it will move the High Court after the Mavelikkara sessions court found the case unproven.

Overview

  • The Mavelikkara Additional Sessions Court cleared every accused, ruling the prosecution failed to prove charges beyond reasonable doubt.
  • Prosecutors alleged a pre-planned attack by Campus Front activists and cited a friend’s account of Vishal naming Popular Front attackers, an ID card recovered at the scene, and weapons seized during the probe.
  • Several witnesses, including SFI and KSU activists, turned hostile during the trial, weakening the prosecution’s case.
  • ABVP Kerala state secretary Eshwar Prasad called the verdict unacceptable and said the group will appeal, alleging delays, witness tampering, and the need to seek a special prosecutor through the Supreme Court.
  • The defence maintained the case was fabricated and argued that, by the police version, a single accused was alleged to have delivered one stab while others carried no weapons.
