Kerala CM to Open Vizhinjam Port’s Second-Phase Expansion on Jan. 24
Backed by about Rs 10,000 crore, the buildout is designed to lift capacity to 50 lakh TEUs with expanded berths and a longer breakwater.
Overview
- The Chief Minister will preside over the inauguration at 4 pm on January 24 in Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram.
- EXIM cargo services will commence with the launch, alongside a new port road linking the terminal to the National Highway bypass.
- The expansion increases berth length from 800 metres to 2,000 metres and extends the breakwater from 3 km to 4 km.
- Annual handling capacity is targeted to rise from 15 lakh TEUs to 50 lakh TEUs after the phase is completed.
- The phase includes development of a railway yard, a multi-purpose berth, a liquid terminal and a tank farm.
