Assam Floods Kill 95 and Affect More Than 1.6 Lakh People

Swelling rivers, embankment breaches, hydropower water releases and fresh heavy-rain warnings are prolonging inundation and slowing relief efforts.

Overview

  • The death toll rose to 95 after six more fatalities were reported, with Sivasagar the worst hit district accounting for about half of the deaths.
  • More than 1.6 lakh people across 14 districts have been affected and tens of thousands remain displaced in hundreds of relief camps and distribution centres.
  • State and central teams have stepped up rescue and relief operations and senior leaders including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union minister J.P. Nadda visited worst-hit villages to promise financial aid and review response.
  • Authorities reported fresh hazards that are worsening the crisis, including embankment breaches, the Dhansiri and Brahmaputra running high, and controlled releases from Kurichhu and Doyang hydel projects that have flooded downstream areas.
  • The government will start a detailed house-damage survey from August 9 to speed compensation and rehabilitation while calls grow for a scientific study into whether upstream land use and mining in Nagaland helped trigger the sudden hill run-off.
