Overview
- Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched construction at Anakkampoyil, formally starting work on Sunday.
- The 8.73-km road will connect Thiruvambady and Meppadi through an 8.11-km twin tunnel between Marippuzha and Meenakshippalam.
- Hyderabad-based Dilip Buildcon will construct the tunnels, and Royal Infrastructure will build the approach roads.
- Officials say the corridor will offer an alternative to the Thamarassery Ghat route and could cut the Anakkampoyil–Meppadi trip by about 22 km and 1.5 hours.
- Planned systems include ventilation, firefighting units, tunnel radio, CCTV, escape-route lighting, emergency call points, traffic signals, and cross connections every 300 metres, and the finished asset is expected to rank as India’s longest twin-tunnel road and third-longest tunnel road.
