Overview
- Self-proclaimed pastor Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and 94 other suspects, including his wife, have been charged with 238 counts of manslaughter over the deaths of more than 200 people in Kenya.
- The victims, found in the Shakahola forest, are believed to have been incited by Mackenzie to starve to death in order to 'meet Jesus'.
- Autopsies revealed that the majority of the victims died of hunger, while others, including children, appeared to have been strangled, beaten or suffocated.
- Mackenzie, who was also charged with terrorism last week, is due to undergo a mental health assessment to establish if he is fit to stand trial for murder.
- The case has led the Kenyan government to consider tightening control of fringe religious denominations.
