Kenya Undertakes Largest-Ever Rhino Relocation

The move aims to control population size and poaching, following a disastrous attempt in 2018.

  • Kenya has embarked on its largest-ever rhino relocation project, moving 21 of the critically endangered animals to a new home.
  • The rhinos are being moved from three conservation parks to the private Loisaba Conservancy in central Kenya due to overpopulation and to create more space for them to roam and breed.
  • A previous attempt at rhino relocation in 2018 ended in disaster when all 11 relocated rhinos died due to stress, dehydration, starvation, and one was attacked by a lion.
  • The rhinos, a mix of males and females, will be transported hundreds of miles in trucks, a process that is expected to take several weeks.
  • Kenya aims to grow its black rhino population to about 2,000, considering the space available for them in national and private parks.
