Kenya Landslide Toll Climbs to 26 as Fresh Slides Reported in Uganda

With roads cut off, responders are relying on airlifts to reach isolated communities.

Overview

  • Kenya’s Interior Ministry confirmed 26 dead and about 25 missing after the Chesongoch landslide in Elgeyo-Marakwet County.
  • Search operations were halted when flash floods swept through the site, and authorities deployed four aircraft to support teams after roads were washed away.
  • More than 30 injured people were airlifted to Eldoret for treatment as the government pledged to cover medical bills, deliver relief by air, and resettle families whose homes were swept away.
  • Officials and aid groups reported extensive destruction, including more than 1,000 homes damaged or destroyed and 15 schools cut off requiring air delivery of national examination papers.
  • Across the border in Uganda’s Mount Elgon region, preliminary reports said at least 15 people are feared dead, villages were buried, and the Suam Bridge crossing was rendered impassable.
