Kenya Issues Arrest Warrant, Moves to Extradite UK National in 2012 Agnes Wanjiru Murder

Prosecutors will now seek the suspect’s extradition to face a Kenyan murder charge.

Overview

  • Nairobi High Court Judge Alexander Muteti ruled there was probable cause and issued a warrant for a UK citizen’s arrest.
  • The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions told the court the accused has been charged with murder and said extradition proceedings will be initiated.
  • The judge prohibited publication of the accused and witnesses’ identities to protect the case’s integrity, with a further court mention set for 21 October 2025.
  • Prosecutors said UK-based witnesses will be made available, following years of joint inquiries since a 2018 inquest found Wanjiru was killed by one or more British soldiers.
  • The UK government said it is committed to helping secure justice, and any extradition request would proceed through Home Office certification and UK court hearings.
