Kentucky Installs First Automated Speed Cameras in Highway Work Zones

Enforcement begins in October under a new law intended to curb dangerous speeding through active construction areas.

Overview

  • Initial devices are in place on U.S. 25 in Fayette County, I-75 near Corbin, and I-64 in Shelby County, and they are currently inactive during a driver adjustment period.
  • Cameras will flag vehicles traveling more than 10 mph over the posted work-zone limit when workers are present so a nearby officer can issue an in-person civil citation.
  • Fines can reach up to $500 when workers are on site, and officials emphasize that no tickets will be mailed or sent by text.
  • Work zones using the technology will feature prominent warning signs and flashing lights, and Kentucky State Police will oversee enforcement at the first locations.
  • More sites are slated to roll out statewide this fall under the Jared Lee Helton Act of 2025, approved after Kentucky logged over 1,200 work-zone crashes last year.
