Kentucky Blood Center Opens Donations to More Cancer Survivors One Year After Treatment

The move follows FDA guidance after a medical review found no evidence of cancer transmission through transfusion.

Overview

  • Effective immediately, survivors of certain organ cancers and melanoma may donate once they are at least one year past completing treatment.
  • Patients with cancers of the blood, bone marrow, or lymphatic system remain permanently ineligible, and people still in treatment or on some cancer-related medications cannot donate.
  • Kentucky Blood Center encourages prospective donors to review eligibility details and make appointments, with eight fixed sites and more than 2,000 mobile drives operating statewide.
  • The center supplies more than 70 hospitals and aims for roughly 400 donors each day, and one whole blood donation can help up to three patients.
  • Seasonal shortages continue with a particular need for O negative and A negative types, and donors who give by January 24 receive a sweatshirt during National Blood Donor Month.
