Kent Teen Who Faked Wheelchair to Steal Beer Jailed for Three Years and One Month

The Maidstone Crown Court sentence followed an attack on Sainsbury's staff recorded on store video.

Overview

  • Davey Brown, 19, pleaded guilty to robbery, affray, criminal damage, common assault, threatening behaviour and driving without insurance, and he was disqualified from driving.
  • Police said he posed as a wheelchair user with an accomplice, concealed two crates of beer under a jacket and attempted to leave the Staplehurst Sainsbury's without paying.
  • Video shows him standing from the chair, punching a security guard and throwing beer items, injuring another worker who required hospital treatment.
  • According to police, the spree began when his car struck a stationary vehicle in Edenbridge before he drove at the victim and ran a red light.
  • He fled the store but was arrested within about 30 minutes, and a 17-year-old co-defendant was sentenced on July 12 to six months in a young offenders' institute.
