Kennedy Appoints Two OB-GYNs to CDC Vaccine Panel, Extending Overhaul of ACIP

The selections reinforce Kennedy’s overhaul of vaccine policymaking by elevating voices critical of shots in pregnancy.

Overview

  • HHS named Adam Urato, MD, and Kimberly Biss, MD, to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices on Jan. 13, adding two OB-GYNs who have questioned the safety of some vaccines in pregnancy.
  • The reconstituted ACIP now has 13 voting members, all appointed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. since he dismissed the prior 17-member panel in June 2025.
  • Under the new lineup, federal guidance has shifted, including overturning the universal newborn hepatitis B recommendation and moving COVID-19 vaccination to shared clinical decision-making for all age groups.
  • Separately, the administration revised the childhood immunization schedule without prior ACIP input, reducing universal recommendations from about 18 diseases to roughly 11, a change criticized by groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics.
  • The committee is scheduled to meet in late February, and HHS has not posted an agenda for the session.
