Kendrick Lamar Joins Clipse Onstage in L.A. for First Live "Chains & Whips"

The surprise cameo underscores Clipse’s Pharrell-produced comeback after leaving Def Jam over the song’s verse, with the album now distributed by Roc Nation.

Overview

  • Lamar appeared unannounced at The Novo in Los Angeles on Aug. 23 to perform his verse on “Chains & Whips” with Pusha T and Malice, marking their first live performance of the track together.
  • After delivering his verse, Lamar called Clipse “legends,” then exited without performing solo material and watched the rest of the show from the crowd.
  • The performance is part of Clipse’s Let God Sort Em Out North American tour, their first since 2009, with dates running through September and additional festival stops later in the year.
  • Let God Sort Em Out, released in July, is the duo’s first album in nearly 16 years and features contributions from Nas, Tyler, The Creator, John Legend and Pharrell Williams.
  • Coverage notes the group exited Def Jam after the label sought changes to Lamar’s verse on “Chains & Whips,” with their team paying a reported seven-figure buyout before moving to Roc Nation distribution; fan-shot videos of the L.A. moment circulated widely.
