Kemp Seeks $1.8 Billion to Add I-75 Toll Lanes in $2.4 Billion Georgia Infrastructure Push

Lawmakers must now weigh a surplus-funded plan that Kemp says will help keep metro Atlanta competitive.

Overview

  • The governor proposes adding one tolled express lane in each direction on a 12-mile stretch of I-75 through Henry and Clayton counties that currently has reversible lanes.
  • His plan is part of a $2.4 billion midyear budget amendment drawn from roughly $9 billion in state surplus funds and unveiled to the Georgia Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta.
  • The package includes $200 million for GA-316 upgrades, $250 million for local road grants, $100 million for bridges and rural community improvements, and $35 million to extend rural natural gas lines.
  • Kemp also proposes a one-time $50 million grant to address homelessness in Atlanta and other urban areas.
  • He argues added express lanes could boost I-75 throughput by up to 70%, building on ongoing toll-lane and I-285 interchange projects, but the plan needs legislative approval.
