Overview
- Use a stand with a reservoir and plan for about 1 quart of water per inch of trunk diameter, with freshly cut trees often taking 0.5–2 gallons on day one.
- Make a fresh, straight cut 1/2–1 inch above the base and place the trunk in warm water immediately, recutting if the stump sits dry for more than about 15 minutes.
- Stick to plain tap water, as additives like sugar, aspirin, soda, vodka or commercial preservatives do not improve uptake, and avoid drilling holes or shaving the trunk sides.
- Choose a recently harvested tree with flexible needles and a sap-sticky stump, transport it secured and cool, and if installation is delayed, store it in a protected, damp area with the base in water.
- Reduce fire risk by keeping the tree at least 3 feet from heat sources, using lights and cords in good condition, unplugging when unattended, and discarding the tree once it begins to dry, typically after three to five weeks.
