Kaufland Launches Reusable Wine Bottles With Deposit in About 200 Southern Stores

A standardized bottle from cooperative Wein-Mehrweg targets glass-related emissions that Kaufland estimates at roughly 47% of a wine’s footprint.

Overview

  • Customers pay a €0.25 deposit per 0.75‑liter bottle, with the rollout focused on southern Germany.
  • Empty bottles and new recycled‑material crates are accepted at all Kaufland reverse‑vending machines nationwide, and the crates carry a €3.50 deposit.
  • The bottles are identifiable by a neck embossing and a Mehrweg label and are designed for up to about 50 refills, according to the cooperative.
  • Kaufland is offering regional red, white and rosé wines in the new format as part of its broader Mehrweg expansion.
  • Wein‑Mehrweg eG, which developed the bottle, brings together 14 producers covering more than 5% of Germany’s wine output and already cooperates with Edeka.
