Kate Bush Pays Tribute to Missing Friend Matthew Upham After Devon Christmas Day Sea Incident

Police say two swimmers are still unaccounted for after a multi‑agency search was stood down on Christmas Day.

Overview

  • In a message on her official website, Bush called Upham "one of my very dearest friends" and said she is heartbroken by his disappearance.
  • Upham’s family posted on Instagram that he is "deeply loved and will be forever missed" and thanked the RNLI and Coastguard for their efforts.
  • Devon and Cornwall Police said several swimmers were rescued and treated, but Mr Upham, 63, and another man believed to be in his 40s have not been found.
  • HM Coastguard said extensive shoreline and offshore searches with RNLI lifeboats, helicopters and a fixed‑wing aircraft were halted at about 5pm on 25 December.
  • Friends reported that Upham entered the stormy water to help a woman in difficulty during conditions covered by a Met Office yellow wind warning.
