Kassel State Theater Opens Modular Interim With 'Aida' Premiere

The six-year, €21.6 million modular venue was built in under two years to keep productions running during the Friedrichsplatz renovation.

Overview

  • The replacement venue opened with a 17:00 ceremony featuring OB Sven Schoeller, Culture Minister Timon Gremmels and Intendant Florian Lutz, ahead of the 19:00 premiere of Verdi’s Aida.
  • Built in roughly 18 months on the former Jägerkaserne site, the hall was prepared for opening night by about 200 performers and technicians.
  • The fully demountable design provides up to around 850 seats, flexible tribunes, a 25-by-50-meter stage room up to 18 meters high, 28 fly lines, an orchestra pit and a heavy-duty turntable.
  • City and state plan six years of use at a combined cost of €21.6 million, with officials maintaining its temporary status after earlier proposals to make it permanent were rejected.
  • The public can visit during Saturday’s open house from 13:30 to 18:00 with tours, a neighborhood talk with the Kassel Huskies and family activities, and a new partnership offers reciprocal 15% ticket discounts with the club.
