Kassel Opens Modular Interim Theater With 'Aida' Premiere

The fully demountable venue on the former Jägerkaserne site will operate for six years during the Friedrichsplatz renovation under a city‑state funding deal.

Overview

  • The opening on 31 October featured a festakt ahead of Verdi’s Aida, with remarks by Mayor Sven Schoeller, Hesse culture minister Timon Gremmels and intendant Florian Lutz.
  • Built in roughly one and a half years on the former Jägerkaserne site, the modular building can be fully dismantled and reassembled elsewhere.
  • The hall seats up to about 850 and features a 25‑by‑50‑meter stage, a coverable orchestra pit, a heavy‑duty turntable, a 28‑line fly system and a four‑storey surrounding gallery.
  • Planned for six years of use, the project carries total costs of about €21.6 million covered through rent and investment subsidies by Kassel and the state of Hesse.
  • Public access begins with an open day on Saturday and a local partnership offering reciprocal 15% ticket discounts with the EC Kassel Huskies.
