Kashmir Endures Deep Freeze and 96% January Rain Shortfall as IMD Flags Incoming Wet Spells

Forecasters see back-to-back western disturbances this week that could bring the season’s first plains snowfall.

Overview

  • Minimum temperatures plunged across the Valley, with Srinagar at −4.7°C and Sonamarg at −8.9°C during the harsh Chillai Kalan period.
  • The MeT projects successive systems from January 19–25, with light to moderate rain or snow likely and a stronger spell expected January 22–24.
  • Parts of the Chenab valley, the Pir Panjal range and south Kashmir could see heavy precipitation during the late-week disturbance, according to the outlook.
  • Srinagar and other plains have not seen their first snowfall of the season, which forecasters say could arrive late this week if the disturbances materialize.
  • MeT data show several districts, including Srinagar, Budgam and Shopian, recorded 100% rainfall deficiency from January 1–14, raising concern for horticulture and water supplies.
