Overview
- The Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes will launch the survey from September 22 to October 7 across the state, with the Greater Bengaluru Authority area starting after a brief delay.
- Over 1.6–2 lakh enumerators, largely teachers, will use a mobile app with Aadhaar authentication to administer about 60 questions to roughly 140–150 households each, with an online option available.
- Following objections, the commission said 33 Christian‑suffix or prefix sub‑castes in the app’s dropdowns will be masked, with any such self‑identification still recorded under the ‘Others’ field.
- Commission officials stressed the internal caste list has no legal sanctity and that validation of caste names is not their remit, reiterating the survey’s focus on social, economic and educational indicators.
- Home Minister G. Parmeshwara said the data will not be used to alter reservations, as BJP leaders, religious figures and some politicians attack the exercise over timing during Dasara and question its legal validity.
