Karnataka Unveils Draft Map for 368 Bengaluru Wards Across Five Corporations

Public objections close on October 15 ahead of a planned final notification on November 1.

Overview

  • The draft, issued under the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, uses the 2011 Census and proposes ward splits of Central 63, South 72, East 50, West 111 and North 72.
  • The Ward Delimitation Commission, chaired by Greater Bengaluru Authority chief commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao, submitted its report on September 30.
  • The notification lists boundaries and prominent areas for each ward but does not publish maps or per‑ward population and size figures.
  • Average ward populations based on 2023 projections range from about 26,000 in the East corporation to over 43,000 in the North, exceeding guideline targets of around 20,000 residents per ward.
  • The city’s wards rise from 198 under the former BBMP to 368 even though the law allows up to 150 per corporation, with civic groups warning larger wards could entrench traditional parties and limit newer entrants.
