Karnataka Transfers Bengaluru Jail Chief, Suspends Two After Videos Show Parties and Phones

The state formed a high-level panel to audit prisons and fast-track security upgrades.

Overview

  • In a press briefing, Home Minister G. Parameshwara said the Chief Superintendent was transferred and the Superintendent and an Assistant Superintendent were suspended, with an IPS officer appointed to head the facility.
  • Officials said multiple clips were shot in 2023 and in recent months, including new footage of inmates drinking and dancing, alongside earlier videos of high-risk prisoners using mobile phones and watching TV.
  • The government set up a committee led by ADGP R. Hitendra with IPS officers Sandeep Patil, Amarnath Reddy and C. B. Risyhanth, tasked to study prisons statewide and submit a report within a month.
  • Planned fixes include a technical audit, installation of CCTVs and mobile jammers, relaying prison camera feeds to senior offices, and separating undertrials from convicts at Parappana Agrahara.
  • Authorities called the incidents a serious security breach given terror-accused inmates’ access to phones, and said disciplinary and legal action, including possible FIRs, is underway as opposition parties protest.
