Karnataka Tightens Response After Bandipur Tiger Killings With Safari Cuts, New Action Plan

The forest minister warned safaris could be halted, signaling a shift to an eight-point plan with technology upgrades, staff redeployment, community patrols.

Overview

  • Combing and trapping are underway in Saragur and Bennegere with two forest elephants, about 50 camera traps and more than 50 additional staff deputed from November 1 to 15.
  • Three tiger incidents in roughly two weeks left two farmers dead — Rajashekar near Bennegere and Doddaningaiah near Kurnigala — and one man, Madegowda, seriously injured.
  • The government reduced one safari trip each at Bandipur and Nagarahole and warned of a complete suspension if human–wildlife conflict is not brought under control.
  • An eight-point plan calls for redeploying personnel from safari zones to hotspots, intensifying patrolling with GPS-fitted vehicles, maintaining patrol registers in border villages, frequent official visits, 24x7 rescue vehicles and community ‘forest mitras.’
  • A two-member expert committee was formed and proposals include an integrated command centre and a dedicated wildlife veterinary cadre, with officials linking the surge in conflict to rising tiger numbers and limited forest space.
