Karnataka Sets Sept. 15 Start for Statewide Count of Sexual Minorities, Re‑Survey of Former Devadasi Women

App-based counts at government facilities will generate data for targeted rehabilitation.

Overview

  • The Department of Women & Child Development set a 45 working day timeline for completing both exercises.
  • The sexual-minorities survey will be conducted by transgender enumerators using a mobile app at all taluk and district government hospitals.
  • The re-survey of former Devadasi women will run in 15 districts at Taluk Child Development Project Officers’ offices, led by officer-level staff from the Devadasi Rehabilitation Project Unit.
  • Both efforts will operate under the Karnataka State Women’s Development Corporation with oversight by Deputy Commissioner–led district committees that include civil-society representatives.
  • The government has developed two dedicated apps and opened helpline 1800 599 2025, with preparatory work completed and posters launched by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
