Karnataka Sets 5.25–5.25–4.5 Split Within SC Quota

The state moved under High Court limits to restart stalled hiring using a new 400-point roster that is designed to make decimal shares workable.

Overview

  • The government, which issued its order Monday, April 27, told departments to resume direct recruitment for 56,432 approved vacancies subject to the High Court’s conditions.
  • Within the 15 percent Scheduled Caste quota, Category A (Madiga and allied castes) gets 5.25 percent, Category B (Holeya and allied castes) gets 5.25 percent, and Category C (Bhovi, Lambani, Korama, Koracha and 59 nomadic communities) gets 4.5 percent.
  • To apply decimal percentages, the roster cycle expands to 400 points, and any notification with fewer than 15 posts will shift those seats into an 'SC General' pool open to all SC groups.
  • Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the state has temporarily adopted a 50 percent overall reservation cap as directed by the High Court, and 20 percent of Category C seats are set aside for the 59 most backward SC communities.
  • The move follows the Supreme Court’s August 2024 ruling that lets states sub-classify SCs, replaces an earlier 6:6:5 plan to respect the 50 percent ceiling, and faces questions over how small-batch hiring and pending cases will play out.
