Karnataka Seeks PM Intervention on Sugarcane Standoff as CM Sets Nov. 7 Talks

State leaders now seek the Prime Minister's intervention to resolve the price standoff.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has called separate meetings with sugar mill owners in the morning and farmer leaders in the afternoon on November 7 in Bengaluru.
  • The Cabinet decided to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after protests for Rs 3,500 per tonne spread from Belagavi to other north Karnataka districts.
  • Belagavi’s Deputy Commissioner said mills were persuaded to offer Rs 3,200 per tonne at 11.25% recovery and Rs 3,100 at 10.25%, excluding harvesting and transport charges.
  • Farmer leaders insist on Rs 3,500 per tonne net to growers, have postponed a Belagavi bandh, and warned of statewide highway blockades if no higher price is announced.
  • The CM cited a central FRP of Rs 3,550 per tonne at 10.25% recovery including H&T, which farmers say leaves only Rs 2,600–3,000 after deductions, while Union Minister Pralhad Joshi urged state-level talks and indicated approval to export about 15 lakh tonnes of surplus sugar.
