Karnataka Replaces Extra 5 Kg Rice Under Anna Bhagya With 'Indira' Food Kits

Officials cite diversion of subsidised rice as the reason, with tenders due soon, costs still disputed.

Overview

  • The Cabinet approved the switch for about 1.26 crore BPL households, covering roughly 4.48 crore people across Karnataka.
  • Each kit will include tur dal, edible oil, sugar and salt, with quantities scaled by family size at 0.5 kg, 1 kg or 1.5 kg per item.
  • Distribution will run through fair price shops, with tenders to be invited shortly and quality and quantity assurances pledged by officials.
  • Ministers H. K. Patil and K. H. Muniyappa said surveys found widespread diversion of PDS rice and that roughly 90% of beneficiaries preferred a mix of food items for better nutrition.
  • The Cabinet cleared an additional ₹61.19 crore for rollout, while some media reports claim the kit model could yield savings of about ₹306 crore per month, a figure the government has not endorsed.
