Karnataka Orders Clean & Green Hampi Action Plan

The aim is to protect the UNESCO site through coordinated tenders, a plastic ban, sanitation upgrades, public awareness programmes.

  • Karnataka’s Tourism Secretary Ram Prasath Manohar, following instructions from Minister K.J. George, directed officials on Thursday to prepare a comprehensive 'Clean & Green Hampi' action plan.
  • The Hampi Development Authority was told to begin a tender process to appoint an agency responsible for systematic cleaning and upkeep across the World Heritage site.
  • Officials were ordered to take steps to ban plastics within HWHAMA limits to reduce pollution and protect Hampi’s monuments and natural surroundings.
  • The Vijayanagara deputy commissioner and HWHAMA were asked to ensure regular cleaning of the Virupaksha Temple toilet complex and to submit a proposal for a new facility under the Travellers Nooks/Hampi Nook Project.
  • The campaign is framed as a people’s effort that will rely on public and tourist participation and its success now depends on procurement, construction and enforcement by multiple agencies including HWHAMA, the district administration and the Archaeological Survey of India.
