Overview
- The state government and BMRDA issued the mobility road-grid notification on Tuesday to cover hundreds of link and village roads in Bengaluru Urban outside the Greater Bengaluru Authority.
- The plan designates corridor widths that raise many existing 10-metre roads to 30 metres, 45 metres and in some cases up to 90 metres and targets specific link gaps such as the roughly 40 km Anekal–Hoskote stretch, Chapparakallu Road and IVC Road.
- Land inside the notified corridors must be left vacant and building a house or creating new layouts on that land will be treated as a legal violation, with officials directed to publish alignments on the BMRDA website and display notices locally.
- Construction and widening work will be carried out in phases over an estimated five to ten years with PWD, Zilla Panchayats and other agencies asked to prioritise stretches and jointly identify routes on the ground.
- Officials say the grid is meant to prevent the past problem of roads that cannot be widened, while also planning for freight hubs, intermodal links and reserved routes for future metro, monorail and BRT corridors, though execution will raise near-term land and governance challenges for owners and local bodies.
