Karnataka Inaugurates Special Action Force to Restore Communal Harmony in Coastal Regions

The 248-officer Communal Violence Control Force will deploy throughout Mangaluru, Udupi, Shivamogga districts as an intelligence-led rapid response team.

  • Home Minister G. Parameshwara formally inaugurated the SAF unit in Mangaluru on June 13 to curb rising communal tensions.
  • The unit comprises 248 officers reassigned from the Anti-Naxal Force, organized into three companies of 78 personnel each.
  • Deputy Inspector General C.H. Sudheer Kumar Reddy will lead the force and coordinate operations with Western Range Inspector General of Police Amith Singh.
  • A dedicated intelligence cell will track hate speech, social media activity and potential flashpoints to pre-empt outbreaks of violence.
  • The force was created in response to a series of revenge killings, mob lynchings and stabbing incidents in coastal Karnataka.
