Karnataka High Court Issues Notice on Prajwal Revanna Appeal With October 28 Hearing

The appeal follows an August life term for repeated rape of a domestic worker by a special court.

Overview

  • A division bench of Justices K. S. Mudagal and Venkatesh Naik T directed the defence to file a comprehensive synopsis and asked the State to clarify whether a Special Public Prosecutor will appear.
  • The special court had convicted Revanna under multiple IPC provisions and the IT Act, sentencing him to imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life under Section 376(2)(n) and life under Section 376(2)(k), and ordering Rs 11.25 lakh in compensation.
  • Prosecutors state the complainant worked as a maid at the Revanna family farmhouse and allege assaults were recorded and used to intimidate her.
  • Revanna remains in judicial custody following his May 30, 2024 arrest on return from Germany, with the SIT probing two additional cases and three other rape cases pending trial.
  • In his appeal, Revanna alleges fabrication, political pressure on the SIT, delay in the complaint, and evidentiary inconsistencies, and his September bid to transfer two other cases away from the trial judge was rejected.
