Karnataka Cabinet Receives Internal SC Reservation Report, Schedules August 16 Review

Ministers have copies of the 1,766-page report ahead of the August 16 session with community leaders contesting leaked quota figures

Overview

  • The 1,766-page report has been distributed to all ministers and will be examined in a special Cabinet meeting on August 16 focused on six recommendations for internal SC quotas.
  • The commission’s survey, led by retired judge H. N. Nagamohan Das, covered more than 90% of the state’s 101 Scheduled Caste communities to inform an equitable subdivision of the existing 17% reservation.
  • Leaked figures propose allocating 6% to Dalit left communities, 5% to Dalit right groups, 4% to Lambanis, Koramas, Korachas and Bhovis, and 1% each to nomadic tribes and the Adi Karnataka, Adi Dravida and Adi Andhra subgroups.
  • Lambani leaders, including Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani and former MLC Prakash Rathod, have challenged their 4% allocation and demanded a 5% share citing undercounting and economic hardship.
  • Dalit left organisations are urging swift adoption of the report’s recommendations to address prolonged disparities within the Scheduled Castes.
