Overview

  • The Karnataka Cabinet approved renaming Bengaluru Rural district as Bengaluru North, Bagepalli town as Bhagyanagar, and Bengaluru City University as Dr Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University.
  • The state will forward the renaming proposals to the Union government for final sanction under provisions of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act.
  • The renamings follow the May decision to brand Ramanagara as Bengaluru South and seek to shed the “rural” tag to enhance investor appeal.
  • Alongside the rebranding, the cabinet cleared Rs 3,400 crore in development projects, allocating Rs 2,050 crore to the Bengaluru revenue division.
  • A high-level subcommittee led by Law Minister H.K. Patil was formed to review illegal mining cases and submit its findings within a month.
