Overview
- The state issued a formal order approving the Social and Educational Survey from September 22 to October 7 under the Backward Classes Commission.
- Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the survey will not be postponed and that the statutory commission will determine how it is conducted.
- The High Court served notices on multiple PILs challenging the survey’s legality and methodology and set September 22 to consider interim requests to halt it.
- Senior ministers and community groups objected to 331 added caste and sub-caste labels, including Christian variants, and party leaders and the commission are considering masking or dropping disputed entries to allow the rollout.
- The exercise is planned to cover nearly 7 crore residents using about 1.8 lakh teachers, with an estimated cost of around ₹420 crore.
