Overview
- Karina Gould, MP for Burlington, was elected chair of the influential House of Commons finance committee on June 16 with Conservative Jasraj Hallan and Bloc Québécois MP Jean-Denis Garon as vice chairs.
- Liberal MPs have also been tapped to lead the industry and technology committee, the transportation and infrastructure committee, and the procedure and House affairs committee.
- Conservative John Williamson will chair the public accounts committee in line with the tradition of assigning that role to the Official Opposition.
- The NDP’s failure to secure official party status in the spring federal election has left its caucus without any committee seats this session.
- Gould’s appointment follows her exclusion from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet despite her earlier leadership bid and prominent role in Justin Trudeau’s team.
