Karachi Reopens Garden Pumping Station After 21 Years

City leaders say the restored plant will begin supplying pipeline water to roughly 300,000 residents, a move they cast as a shift toward delivering basic services.

Overview

  • Mayor Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the fully rehabilitated Garden Water Pumping Station on Sunday, August 23, 2026, ending 21 years of non-operation that began after the facility was built in 2005.
  • The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation completed the project for Rs. 30.25 million, carrying out civil repairs, rewinding two 125-horsepower motors, replacing ball bearings, installing two motor control boards, and laying new PVC and low-tension cables.
  • Officials say the station will feed 24-inch and 18-inch pipelines that will supply Garden, Nishter Road, Ghas Mandi, Ranchore Line, Ramswami, Lyari, Usmanabad, Badshahi Road and adjoining areas.
  • City authorities stated water supply from the facility would begin immediately, with around 300,000 residents in the listed neighbourhoods expected to benefit from improved pipeline delivery.
  • Wahab used the reopening to blame long-standing neglect and to call for development-focused politics, and city officials say the renewed pipeline service could reduce residents’ reliance on costly water truck deliveries and ease daily hardship.
