Karachi Opens Pakistan’s First Floating Mangrove Biodiversity Park at Korangi Creek

The initiative links public conservation outreach to municipal plans to curb coastal pollution through new parks and sewage treatment projects.

Overview

  • The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation launched the park in collaboration with the Sindh Forest Department as a platform for mangrove protection and environmental education.
  • Mayor Murtaza Wahab said KMC will add mangrove biodiversity parks near the Karachi Port Trust building and at Neti (Native) Jetty in Keamari.
  • Two sewage treatment plants are under construction—Haroonabad at 100 MGD, initially treating 35 MGD, and Mauripur TP-3 at 54 MGD—with operations targeted by year-end and a fourth plant planned for Ibrahim Hyderi.
  • Wahab appealed to civil society and the business community, including real estate stakeholders, to support and scale the city’s conservation efforts.
  • Officials cited the Sindh Forest Department’s Guinness World Record for mangrove planting and said President Asif Ali Zardari is personally monitoring related coastal projects in Sujawal, Thatta, and Badin.
