Karachaganak Output Cut After Drone Strike Disrupts Russia’s Orenburg Gas Plant

Officials say reserves will keep domestic supply steady, with processing expected to resume within days.

Overview

  • Kazakh Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov reported a 9,000-ton output shortfall and limited acceptance of Kazakh gas at the Orenburg facility, calling the impact economic but manageable.
  • Kazakhstan currently has no alternative to Orenburg for processing Karachaganak gas, with about 9 billion cubic meters a year handled at the Russian plant.
  • The Karachaganak Venture confirmed it reduced production after the Oct. 19 attack that damaged the Orenburg plant and sparked a workshop fire.
  • Anonymous estimates reported by Reuters put field output below 200,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, with some reports describing a roughly 25%–30% reduction.
  • The Energy Ministry said domestic gas supplies and exports remain stable through reserves and substitution contracts, and authorities target restoring production levels within roughly three days.
