Overview

• The fire broke out around 9:05 am in a ground-floor catering workshop at Ram Kisan Mestri Chawl in Kandivali East and was extinguished by about 9:30–9:33 am.
• Six women and one man were hurt, with three suffering roughly 85–90% or 90% burns and others 70–80%; several patients are on ventilators and listed as critical.
• Injured workers were moved from ESIC and Shatabdi hospitals to Kasturba Hospital, the National Burns Centre in Airoli and AUM Superspeciality Hospital for advanced care.
• Investigators are examining whether the blaze stemmed from an LPG cylinder leak or blast or from electrical wiring or installations, as initial official accounts differ.
• Local reports say the Shivani Caterers unit lacked required clearances, and separate fires the same day in Kurla West shanties and at a south Kolkata guesthouse were contained without injuries.
