Kanagawa Police Refer Three Senshu University Ice Hockey Students in Cannabis Case

Prosecutors will now review the case following weeks of suspended team activities.

Overview

  • Kanagawa Prefectural Police on September 22 submitted case files to prosecutors on suspicion of cannabis use by three male students in their 20s from Senshu University’s ice hockey team.
  • The students were questioned by officers in late July in Kawasaki, where plant fragments believed to be used cannabis were found and urine tests for all three returned positive results.
  • A student dormitory at the university’s Ikuta Campus in Kawasaki’s Tama Ward was searched on July 30 as part of the investigation.
  • The ice hockey club has been suspended since late July, and the university says no other members of the team have been found involved so far.
  • Senshu University pledged campus-wide measures to prevent recurrences, noting the campus had earlier faced a separate July arrest of a former judo club member over cannabis.
