Kampnagel Begins Three-Year Renovation and 50% Expansion

The €168 million conservation-led project preserves performances during construction while upgrading the venue’s aging infrastructure.

Overview

  • The symbolic groundbreaking took place on Friday, October 30, 2026, launching a roughly three-year generalsanierung that will keep Kampnagel open for events in non-work areas.
  • The project budget is €168 million with the federal government providing €60 million and the City of Hamburg funding the remainder, and the work will be delivered by the municipal Sprinkenhof GmbH.
  • Paris firm Lacaton & Vassal will lead a reuse-focused redesign that adds about 7,000 square meters of space and favors upgrading existing industrial fabric over wholesale demolition.
  • Planned upgrades include an 850-seat telescopic tribune for Halle K6, a very flexible cleared space in K1, a new K7 building for rehearsals and workshops with a public roof, and a 26-room residence for international artists.
  • Front-of-house changes will move ticketing into the foyer, convert the existing restaurant into a bar-café, create a 110-seat restaurant in the former box office, and better integrate the Alabama cinema to free space for a second screen.
