Kamchatka Records 25 Aftershocks in a Day as Volcanic Unrest Continues

Scientists expect most events to stay below about magnitude 6.5.

Overview

  • Rescue officials reported 25 aftershocks in the past 24 hours with a maximum magnitude of 6.4, and one was felt in populated areas.
  • Seismic activity has fluctuated this week, including 44 aftershocks the previous day with five felt in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Elizovo.
  • Geophysicist Danila Chebrov said the aftershock process is developing unevenly, with recent activation near Avachinsky Bay, and he does not anticipate magnitudes exceeding roughly 6.5.
  • Volcanic monitoring confirmed an ash emission from Krasheninnikov and elevated activity at Klyuchevskoy, Bezymianny, Shiveluch, Karymsky and Kambalny, with no ashfall reported in settlements and a warning to keep away from the volcanoes.
  • The region remains under a natural-state emergency as monitoring intensifies, and the Petropavlovsk-tsunami station now processes quake data in 2–4 minutes before alerts are sent to services and residents.
