Kamchatka Records 15 Aftershocks as Volcanic Unrest Continues

Officials say elevated seismicity persists under a natural emergency regime.

  • The regional EMERCOM reported 15 aftershocks off Kamchatka in the past 24 hours, ranging from magnitude 3.8 to 5.2, with two tremors felt in settlements up to intensity three.
  • A day earlier, 31 aftershocks up to magnitude 5.7 were logged off the peninsula, none of which were felt in towns, according to EMERCOM.
  • An offshore magnitude 5.3 earthquake was recorded on October 4 at a depth of about 33 km and roughly 201 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the RAS geophysical service said.
  • Volcanic activity includes ash emissions from Shiveluch, Kronotsky and Krasheninnikov with no populated areas under the plumes, and scientists note ongoing activity at Bezymianny, Klyuchevskoy, Karymsky and Kambalny.
  • Authorities continue intensive monitoring under the emergency regime introduced after the July 30 magnitude 8.8 mainshock, and a separate magnitude 5.5 quake in Kyrgyzstan was reported with no casualties.
