Kamchatka Logs 32 Aftershocks in 24 Hours as M6.3 Quake Strikes Offshore

Authorities keep the region under a natural emergency regime following the late-July M8.8 event.

  • Seismologists reported an undersea magnitude 6.3 event at 06:18 local time with the epicenter at 51.3007°N, 159.8685°E, about 214 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at roughly 19 kilometers depth.
  • EMERCOM said 32 aftershocks ranging from magnitude 3.5 to 6.3 were recorded in the past day, with two felt by residents.
  • The previous 24-hour period saw 44 aftershocks of magnitude 3.5 to 6.0, eight of which were felt in populated areas.
  • Regional authorities reported building damage from recent strong shaking and reopened temporary shelters in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Vilyuchinsk and Yelizovsky District.
  • Scientists note elevated activity at the Kambalny, Bezymianny, Shiveluch, Klyuchevskoy, Karymsky and Krasheninnikov volcanoes, and emergency services advise people to stay away from them.
