Kamchatka Logs 10 Aftershocks as M4.5 Quake Strikes South Kurils

Emergency measures remain in place with scientists tracking heightened volcanic activity after July’s M8.8 quake.

  • Russia’s Emergencies Ministry reported 10 aftershocks off Kamchatka in the past day with magnitudes from 3.5 to 5.5, none felt in populated areas.

  • A separate magnitude 4.5 earthquake was recorded on November 21 near Shikotan, 27 kilometers northwest of Malokurilskoye at a depth of 77 kilometers, according to the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station.
  • Shaking from the South Kurils event was felt up to 3–4 intensity in Malokurilskoye and 2–3 in Yuzhno-Kurilsk, and no tsunami warning was issued.
