KakaoTalk to Integrate ChatGPT Next Month in Sweeping AI Redesign

The overhaul targets falling engagement by repositioning KakaoTalk as a feed-driven, AI-assisted super app.

Overview

  • Starting in October, users will access the latest GPT-5 inside the chat tab with one tap and share AI-generated text and images in real time.
  • Kakao stated KakaoTalk chat data will not be used to train ChatGPT.
  • The service is getting its biggest UI update in 15 years, adding a feed-style friends view, multiple-reply threads, a new content tab, chat grouping, message previews, and the ability to edit sent messages.
  • A Kakao–OpenAI codeveloped agent is slated for early November, while Kakao’s in-house Kanana will handle scheduling, conversation summaries, web searches, reservations, and short-form content creation.
  • ChatGPT capabilities will extend to Kakao services such as Gifts, Map and Reservations, and Kakao is recruiting AI-native talent as usage per user has declined since 2021, according to Mobile Index.
